Effect of annual self-reseeding legumes on subsequent crops in organic rotation programme Organic Eprints
Al-Bitar, Lina.
Soil fertility management is a critical issue in organic agriculture, and nitrogen supply is the most important aspect, especially in the Mediterranean region. Biological nitrogen fixation by legumes seems to be a successful strategy in that nitrogen-fixing legumes can provide most of the nitrogen used in Mediterranean agriculture in a form not readily leached. According to Pimentel et al., 1992, in the U.S., an estimated $50 billion worth of nitrogen is provided by biological N fixation. Thus, the inputs of nitrogen into Mediterranean agricultural systems by biological fixation in nodulated legumes are fundamental to obtain sustainable and economic production. This study aimed at evaluating the impact of annual self-reseeding legumes on subsequent crops...

IS INCREASED INSTABILITY IN CEREAL PRODUCTION IN ETHIOPIA CAUSED BY POLICY CHANGES? AgEcon
Alemu, Zerihun Gudeta; Oosthuizen, Klopper; van Schalkwyk, Herman D..
In Ethiopia, growth in cereal production is accompanied by a more than proportionate increase in the standard deviation of production. This study applies descriptive and variance decomposition procedures to determine the sources of increased instability in cereal production in order to show whether they are caused by policy changes. It was found that production instability was caused more by increased yield instability. Considering the fact that use of high-powered inputs is limited to a small number of farmers, production is at subsistence level and that farmers' responsiveness to policy changes is constrained by infrastructural and institutional constraints and by the existing land policy, instability in yield is predominantly attributed to weather...

Cover Crop (Rye) and No-Till System in Wisconsin Organic Eprints
Alföldi, Thomas.
Erin Silva, University of Wisconsin, describes an organic no-till production technique using rye as cover crop to suppress weeds in the following production season. Using a roller-crimper, the overwintering rye is terminated at the time of cash crop planting, leaving a thick mat of plant residue on the soil surface. Soybeans are sown directly into the cover crop residue, allowing the cash crop to emerge through the terminated cover crop while suppressing weeds throughout the season. While this system works well for soybeans, further research for corn is needed.

Alkemade, Joris; Arncken, Christine; Voegele, Ralf T.; Finckh, Maria R.; Hohmann, Pierre; Messmer, Monika.

Quantifying resistance and lifestyle assessments of Colletotrichum in lupin Organic Eprints
Alkemade, Joris; Messmer, Monika M.; Finckh, Maria R.; Vögele, Ralf T.; Hohmann, Pierre.
Currently Europe imports large amounts of unsustainably produced soy to meet the plant-based protein demand of the feed and food industry. The high protein content and low nutrient requirements of white lupins make them a sustainable local alternative. However, lupin cultivation is severely impaired by anthracnose disease, caused by the seed- and air-borne fungus Colletotrichum lupini. Low levels of seed infestation can already lead to complete yield loss. Understanding the pathogen’s lifestyle and identifying sources of resistance are therefore of major importance to make the re-introduction of white lupin a success. Resistance screening was performed under controlled conditions. Disease severity was scored visually and qPCR was performed on inoculated...

Cultivar differences in early spatial distribution of wheat, onion and lettuce roots Organic Eprints
Andresen, Marianne; Dresbøll, Dorte Bodin; Thorup-Kristensen, Kristian.
Organic plant production is generally dependent on import of plant nutrients from conventional farming 26 systems. With increasing focus on reducing the conventional import, increased nutrient use efficiency is an 27 aim in organic agricultural systems. One way to achieve this is by choosing nutrient efficient cultivars or by 28 breeding for such. It is especially in the plant establishment phase, that an efficient nutrient uptake is 29 important. At this stage, plants have limited root growth and thereby limited soil contact and nutrient 30 uptake. The possibility of the initial roots to exploit as large a volume as possible will therefore increase 31 nutrient uptake. In addition, in early spring nutrient levels in the soil are low as mineralization is...

Review of obstacles to meeting the Defra Action Plan targets for organic cereals Organic Eprints
ANON,.
The Defra ‘Action Plan to Develop Organic Food and Farming in England’ identifies cereals as the organic commodity farthest from meeting demand from UK production. The project quantified the extent and nature of this deficit and collected information on constraints from research projects and reviews, from advisers & farmers and from cereal buyers & end users. The obstacles to increased organic cereal production were identified and suggestions made on what Defra and the industry could do to help overcome them. The study focused on England but, as the main buyers of cereals operate across the UK, the supply and demand modelling was of necessity done on that basis. As identified by the Defra Organic Action Plan and by the Scotland and Wales plans,...

Comb harrow: efficient weed control in cereals Organic Eprints
Apostolov, Stoylko; Kirov, P; Tihov, N.
In the beginning, weeds with shallow roots were successfully eradicated by the harrow. Others (e.g., burdock and stork’s bill) were controlled to a certain extent. The results of FAO "Bioselena" show that the application of the comb harrow had a significant impact on the yield, with an increase of 12.7 % for wheat, 16.7 % for spelt and 23.4 % for ein-korn. The weeds decreased by 51.15 %, 58.14 % and 36.37 %, respectively. Practical recommendations • Drill winter cereals in rows with an increased sowing rate of 7-10 % compared to conventional cereal crops during the most appropriate period (September 25 to October 5 for Northern Bulgaria, 5 to 15 October for Southern Bulgaria). • When the crop is in the „3-leaf“ stage, control the emerging weeds with a...

Hybridsorten im Bio-Getreide? Perspektiven und Akzeptanz der Hybridzüchtung für den Bio-Anbau Organic Eprints
Arncken, Christine; Dierauer, Hansueli.

Hybrid Varieties for Organic Cereals? Prospects and acceptance of hybrid breeding for organic production Organic Eprints
Arncken, Christine; Dierauer, Hansueli.
Hybrid breeding utilizes the advantages characterizing F1 plants in a targeted manner: Vigour, uniformity, and a combination of all dominant traits of the parental lines. It gives breeders secure licences, as farmers can not save seed from hybrid varieties with a view to replanting. Regarding rye, the current advantages of hybrid varieties are primarily the higher yields but also improved resistances to lodging and sprouting. However, farmers can only benefit from higher yields if the limited market for organic rye in Switzerland can be expanded. The currently available hybrid rye varieties have higher susceptibility to leaf rust and ergot infections. The criticism of hybrid breeding and hybrid varieties concerns four areas: Firstly, the area of...

Breeding for Mixed Cropping and Anthracnose Resistance of Lupins Organic Eprints
Arncken, Christine; Hohmann, Pierre; Messmer, Monika.
Introduction In Switzerland, the organic sector has been trying to reduce the massive import of protein crops for feed by encouraging grain legume cultivation during the past years (Clerc et al, 2015). The main limiting factors of low yield stability and high weed pressure were successfully overcome through intercropping of peas and faba beans with barley and oats, respectively. Thus, the production of peas and faba beans grew continuously from 2010 to 2015 from 200t and 90t to 1170t and 560t, respectively (bioaktuell 2017). For more diversification of domestic grain legume cultivation and supply, FiBL has started field trials with blue (Lupinus angustifolius) and white lupins (L. albus) in 2014. The high risk of anthracnose, caused by the fungal agent...
